The Eltham
Garden Retreat is located at the quiet end of John Street,
one of Eltham's tree-lined, no through roads. Two mud
brick cottages and a loft are attractive examples of traditional mud
brick building set in a secluded garden setting just 25
minutes from Melbourne's centre.
Nestled in the
privacy of a one and a half-acre garden landscaped by
Gordon Ford, all buildings and environs are harmoniously
integrated. This property is one of Eltham's oldest
natural style gardens and has been a part of Australia's
Open Garden Scheme since its inception.
One cottage
consists of a trio of interlinked round rooms with a
private courtyard and waterfall; the other is a more
traditional cottage design. The Loft is the second storey of the
original house. Each building has all modern
facilities and equipment.
The interior of both cottages reflects the simplicity and
tranquillity of the garden. Whitewashed mud brick walls,
soft terracotta tiled floors and quality linen fabrics
create a restful atmosphere for anyone desiring a
secluded retreat from a noisy urban world.
The Loft has polished
wooden floors, an ensuite bathroom and a private balcony.
While close to
all facilities the Eltham Garden Retreat maintains a bush
feel. Visitors are welcome to sit beside the waterfall
and ponds, stroll along the soft tracks leading through
the bird attracting native garden or visit the many local
cultural attractions. The Museum of Modern Art at Heide
and the artist's community at Montsalvat are close by as
are the regions' famed Yarra Valley wineries. Local
restaurants provide multi cultural food delights.
